Articles Needed for the ODR!

Are you the next William Shakespeare? How about J.K. Rowling? The Oregon Distance Runner (ODR) is the magazine published by ORRC six times per year, and we need contributions! Not monetary contributions but literary. Have you always wanted to write? Now is your chance! Do you have a favorite event? Have you had a memorable running experience? Are you training for your first marathon? Are you volunteering in the running community? We want to hear about it!

In addition to being able to say "why yes, I am a published writer!" ORRC will also give every writer who is selected for publication in the ODR $30 of ORRC volunteer bucks. ORRC bucks are good for race entries, membership payments, or for purchasing ORRC merchandise. Running shoes are good for.... well, you know. So have an article published, and you could pay for a year's membership... or purchase a new ORRC shirt... or pay for your entry to the Turkey Trot and have some volunteer bucks left over!  Such a deal!

So get those literary juices flowing and submit your article today. And do you have a picture to go with it? All the better! Submissions may be mailed or e-mailed to the editor, Bryan Westby at editor@orrc.net or timerlinetrail@gmail.com. Please note that electronic submissions are preferred.

Please remember that articles chosen for publication are selected based on quality of writing, and relevance to ORRC's mission which includes promoting road racing, running and related activities, and informational programs for both competition and recreation for the benefit of fitness, fun, health, and the quality of life. Since the ODR has a “theme” for each publication, articles may also be chosen for their relevance to that issues “theme”. Articles do not have to follow the theme (we appreciate stories about member's personal running stories), but the theme may be used as a factor in deciding which articles to print.  Please note that slight editing may be used to enhance your articles.

Please also note that articles should not try and raise money for any charity or individual.

Guidelines for submissions and deadlines are as follows:

The theme for the September/October issue is “Running routes and reviews of established races”

The deadline for submitting and article is NOW! July 29, 2009

It’s a really quick deadline but if you can submit an article in time there is an added bonus! Road Runner Sports is offering a pair of running shoes to the person selected who submits the best 5-mile (more or less) running route in the area!

The theme for the November/December ODR is “Youth, and master’s running -- Running and Aging”

The deadline for submitting an article for consideration is: September 30, 2009

The theme for the January/February ODR is “Medical Issues related to Running”

The deadline for submitting an article for consideration is: November 25, 2009

The length of the articles should be 500 - 1,000 words, and can include photos.  If photos are included they should be 300 dpi, either black & white, or grayscale.

Was your article not chosen for publication? Don’t fret! Articles not selected for publication might be posted on the ORRC website! However, please note that articles not selected in the ODR but posted on the website will not be eligible for the $30 of ORRC bucks.
