New ORRC Board Members Needed!

ORRC needs your help. Have you ever wanted to play a more active role in the running community? Ever wanted to give back to the community what you have received over the years? Want to try a challenge? ORRC is looking for a few new members to join the Board and help run the organization. What is the ORRC Board and what does it do? What positions are open? How much time is involved? What experience do I need to volunteer to serve on the Board? How do I volunteer? What's in it for me? All good questions!  Here are some answers.

1. What is the ORRC Board and what does it do?
The ORRC Board is made up of ORRC members who volunteer their time to help run the club. They make decisions about what events to put on, provide support to Race Directors who put on the events, make financial decisions for the club, figure out ways to give back to the running community through running and training events, and volunteer at non-ORRC events, such as Race for the Cure and the Portland Marathon. Various positions on the board include (but not limited to): President, Treasurer, Secretary, VP of Races, Membership Chair, various "At-Large" positions.

2. What positions are open?
We have several at large positions open. These positions involve participating in board discussions, voting on items brought to the board, approving reports (such as Treasurer, Membership, and VP reports), taking on various short-term tasks and/or projects as needed. For example one at-large position took on the responsibility for purchasing new equipment in 2010. Another helps purchase awards for the annual banquet.

3. How much time is involved?
The Board meets once per month on the third Wednesday of each month (typically taking the month of July off). Meetings generally last about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. There can be additional discussions done via email between meetings. Board members are expected to attend and actively participate in the discussions. Board members are also expected to be supportive of ORRC events throughout the year. This doesn't mean you have to participate in or volunteer at every event, but it does mean you need to be supportive in general.

4. What experience do I need to volunteer to serve on the Board?

Not everybody who volunteers can be selected to serve on the board. What are we looking for? Someone who is enthusiastic and who has preferably volunteered in some capacity for ORRC in the past. For example, if you volunteer at a lot of races so know many of the events ORRC puts on, this could be the next evolution in your voluntary ladder.

5. How do I volunteer?
Contact any board member, or Valerie Pratt the ORRC volunteer coordinator, or simply send an email to the ORRC email address at orrc@orrc.net

6. What's in it for me?

Free pizza at each Board meeting! The great feeling you get when you give back to a wonderful organization that has given you so much in terms of fun and high-quality events. The opportunity to get to know others who love running as much as you do. And anything else you can think of when you give of yourself to others.

We know someone out there is ready for this exciting and fun challenge! So take the plunge, get involved, and give back to the wonderful community of the Oregon Road Runners Club
